Legal status of the port of Zeebrugge

The Maatschappij van de Brugse Zeevaartinrichting (MBZ) has been a public limited liability company (naamloze vennootschap) ever since it was set up in 1895. Under the Port Decree of 2 March 1999 an agreement was concluded on 17 May 2001 between the Flemish Region and the City of Bruges, transferring the Flemish Region’s shares in N.V. MBZ to the City of Bruges. This made the City of Bruges the majority shareholder in MBZ. N.V. MBZ remains an autonomous public law government company.
