Like the port of Zeebrugge, the port of Ostend lies on the Belgian coast. It is the smaller of the two coastal ports and concentrates on roll-on roll-off traffic to and from Great Britain. The port of Ostend was once Belgium’s largest passenger harbour, but this activity has reduced sharply in recent years, to be replaced by goods turnover. Apart from roll-on roll-off a major part of the total traffic is sand and gravel dredged from the sea for the building industry.
